How to Create a Gracious Guest Room

It’s always a treat to stay in someone’s home, especially when it’s a thoughtful, well-appointed space.  When decorating guest bedrooms, it’s important to pay attention to the details.  With the holiday season upon us and overnight guests on the way, why not give your guest room a little “refresh”? Here are a few of my favorite tips for creating a gracious guest bedroom:

1. Make it functional

What items do your guests really need??  1- A place to sleep- a bed (or a beautifully dressed pull-out sofa bed works too!)  2- A place for their clothing and/or luggage.  3- They will also need a bedside table with adequate lighting and charging cords/outlets. 4- Easy access to a bathroom.

2. Make it comfortable

When decorating a guest room, make every effort to create a space as comfortable and inviting as possible.  Be sure to use a variety of pillows for the bed (soft and firm), extra blankets, or a duvet in case your guests feel chilly.  A pretty area rug or carpet feels great underfoot.  Don’t forget to add draperies that soften the windows and provide light control.

3. Make it Beautiful

When planning your guest room, always start with a pleasing color scheme, (maybe even colors that complement the rest of your home).  Also, be sure to choose beautiful bedding and accent pillows for the bed. A nice mix of colors and patterns.  To learn more about creating a luxurious, layered bed click HERE. Don’t forget to select draperies, artwork, and accessories that complement your color scheme- these will add a special finishing touch to your room.

4. Make it thoughtful

I love to stock a guest bedroom with little extras to make guests feel welcome and special.  Maybe set out a pretty basket of toiletries, a few magazines, and even a couple of books about your town/area so guests can relax by reading before bed.  A big fluffy white robe hanging in the closet is always a nice touch, maybe even a small snack, treat, or a few bottles of water.  Small, thoughtful gestures like these always make guests feel special.

Whether you have a dedicated guest bedroom or a “multi-functional-double-duty” guest room, pay attention to the details by creating a functional, comfortable, beautiful, and thoughtful space for your guests!
