Five Easy Steps to a More Organized Home

One of the keys to having a great looking home is getting organized and STAYING organized- the less clutter you have, the more spacious and beautiful your home will look.  I always say that the first step to decorating is actually decluttering!

Here are my five easy steps to getting and staying organized…

1. Make Time.

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part.  Schedule time on your calendar, like you would any other appointment.  Also, don’t try to tackle the whole house, pick a single space and dive in.  Be sure to reward yourself with a special treat when you are done!

2. Make a Mess-

Getting organized is a dirty job, so just go ahead and pull everything out, don’t be afraid to make a huge mess!  Take all your items and divide them into four categories:
1. Keep- items you need to keep in the space.
2. Relocate- items you want to keep, but move to another space.
3. Donate/Sell- items in good condition you do not wish to keep.
4. Trash- broken or unwanted items.

3. Make Decisions-

Organizing your home can sometimes be a very emotional process, but this is no time for indecision.  The rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it!  If you have a hard time “letting go”, put all of your “questionable” items in a large box or tote and label it with a date for one year later.  If you haven’t used or needed anything from that box by that date, it may be time to say goodbye.

4. Make Room for Everything-

Once you have pared everything down and decided on what is staying.  Group all your things according to a category, such as “Belts” or “Dolls” or “Office Supplies”.  Find or purchase good looking baskets, plastic totes, boxes or shelving to label and store these items together.

5. Make a Commitment to Stay Organized-

Once your space is neat and organized, make a habit of putting things back in their designated spot.  Also, commit to a regular purging of your spaces to keep them neat and clutter-free.

Getting organized costs little to no money, but will make such a difference in your home and your life!  Take the time to make your home a priority. Simply repeat these five steps and work your way room-by-room and in no time, you will have a more organized, clutter-free home!
