10 Fall Styling Essentials

Fall is one of my favorite seasons to refresh our home’s decor. There’s something about cooler temperatures, changing leaves, cozy textures, and warm colors that makes us want our homes to feel a little more comfortable and inviting.
But decorating for fall doesn’t mean covering every surface with plastic pumpkins and fake fall leaves!
In fact, I think the most beautiful fall homes are the ones that feel seasonal without being overly decorated. A few thoughtful styling updates can completely transform the feeling of a room without requiring a major makeover-or a lot of money.
Here are my 10 fall styling essentials for creating a home that feels warm, cozy, and beautifully put together the upcoming fall season.
10. A Warm Fall Color Palette
You don’t have to decorate your home in orange and brown to make it feel like fall. Instead, introduce a few warm, earthy colors that complement the colors you already have. Think caramel, rust, olive green, terracotta, warm taupe, amber, and deep burgundy.
You can bring these colors in through pillows, throws, artwork, flowers, and accessories.
The key is repetition. Choose one or two fall colors and repeat them throughout your home rather than introducing lots of different colors.
9. Fall Foliage and Flowers
One of the easiest ways to bring fall into your home is with something from nature. Branches, eucalyptus, dried grasses, wheat, magnolia leaves, mums, and seasonal flowers can instantly make a room feel more autumnal.
And don’t feel like everything has to be orange! Greenery, dried grasses, and branches in soft neutral tones can create a beautiful fall feeling without screaming “fall décor.” Also, a little will go a long way-try placing a simple arrangement on your dining table, kitchen island, entry console, or coffee table.
8. Cozy Textures
Fall is all about texture.
As the weather cools down, introduce softer, more tactile materials throughout your home—think chunky knits, woven baskets, velvet, boucle, linen, leather, and natural wood. You don’t need to change your furniture. Simply layering a few different textures can make a room feel instantly warmer and more inviting.
Think more texture, not more décor.
7. A Beautiful Throw
Nothing says cozy quite like a throw casually draped over the arm of a sofa or the back of a chair. Choose something soft and substantial in a color that complements your existing décor. A warm neutral, camel, rust, olive, or deep brown can work beautifully for fall.
And don’t fold it too perfectly! A casually draped throw makes a room feel relaxed and inviting.
6. Pillows with Personality
Changing a few pillows is one of my favorite ways to refresh a room for a new season.
You don’t need to replace every pillow you own. Simply add one or two pillows in a beautiful fall color or texture. Look for subtle patterns, natural fabrics, velvet, woven textures, or rich autumnal colors. Once again, a little seasonal color goes a long way.
5. Candles and Warm Lighting
Fall is the perfect time to create a little more ambiance in your home. Candles add warmth and fragrance, while table and floor lamps create the soft glow that makes a room feel especially cozy in the evening.
If you haven’t already, take a look around your rooms and ask yourself: Where could I add a little more light? A lamp or glass hurricane on a console, buffet, or side table can make a surprisingly big difference.
4. Natural Wood and Organic Elements
Natural materials have a way of making a room feel warm and grounded-and they’re especially beautiful in the fall. Look for opportunities to add wood, rattan, wicker, stone, woven baskets, or other organic materials.
A wooden bowl filled with pinecones, a woven basket beside a chair, or a rustic wood accessory on a coffee table can add just the right amount of seasonal warmth.
3. A Simple Fall Centerpiece
Your dining table or kitchen island is a perfect place to create a seasonal focal point. But remember: simple is usually better. Try a bowl filled with apples or pears, a vase of branches, a few candles, or a low arrangement of seasonal flowers.
You don’t need a complicated centerpiece, or something that takes up the entire table. The goal is to create something beautiful while still leaving plenty of room to actually use the space.
2. Fall Front Door Wreath
When adding seasonal touches to your home, don’t forget your front door, it’s the first thing your guests see!
A beautiful fall wreath is one of the easiest ways to make your home feel welcoming and seasonal before anyone even walks through the door. You don’t have to choose a traditional wreath covered in pumpkins and orange leaves. I love natural-looking wreaths made from dried grasses, magnolia leaves, eucalyptus, grapevine, or other organic materials.
Choose something that complements your home’s exterior and your personal style. And if you invest in a classic wreath, you may be able to use it for several fall seasons.
1. Fall Fragrance
One of the most overlooked ways to make your home feel seasonal is through scent.
Our sense of smell is closely connected to memory and emotion, so the right fragrance can instantly make a home feel warm and inviting. For fall, look for scents like cinnamon, clove, vanilla, cedar, apple, amber, or pumpkin-but don’t feel like you have to go for an overly sweet “pumpkin spice” fragrance. A subtle seasonal candle, diffuser, simmer pot, or even the smell of something baking in the oven can create that cozy fall feeling.
The goal isn’t just for your home to look like fall. You want it to feel like fall, too.
